Hydrotherapy is a form of physical medicine using the therapeutic application of water in a variety of ways.

Hydrotherapy or water therapy, is a complementary therapy that uses water for health purposes.

Applied to areas of the body or body parts can be immersed in water.

It can be used in hot, warm, neutral cold, ice or steam from directly or via materials like cotton towel.

It is cheap, efficient enjoyable and safe

It provides greater energy, improved skin function, appearance and health.

Compresses, Fomentation & packs

Heating Compress

Procedure

  • Squeeze out the cotton material in cold water
  • Keep it over the painful area
  • Immediately cover it with woolen/flannel material and plastic material
  • Compress should be properly fitted

Indications:

  • Painful joints
  • Mastitis
  • Back ache
  • Tight chest from Bronchitis

Caution:

  • For any reason if the compress is cold even after 10mnts remove it

Mechanism:

  • Cold material should quickly become warm and patient should feel comfortable

Fomentation

Procedure

  • Lightly squeeze out the woolen/towel and keep it in the affected area between the many layers of dry large towels.And then cover it immediately with sheet.
  • Once in every 5 mints change the application and between each application keep cold wet towel on the area for few seconds.
  • Apply it for 3 4 times and finally rub with a cold towel.

Indications:

  • Pain
  • Muscle spasms
  • Neuralgia between ribs
  • Dysmenorrhea
  • Renal colic

Contraindication:

  • Cancer, Heart diseases, Diabetes, Sensitive skin

Packs

Full Wet sheet pack

Procedure

  • Have a warm water bath and without drying, wrap a cold wet sheet which water squeezed.
  • Should cover with a blanket and put sheet around neck to feet.
  • Keep hot water bottles near the feet.
  • Remove the pack when it is cold, give brisk rub.

Trunk Pack

  • Fold a thick towel in to 2 or 3 folds or blanket large enough to cover from arm pit to umbilicus and long enough to tight around.
  • Place one thick damp well squeezed cotton material narrower than covering material over this.
  • Lie on top of this and wrap the material over to cover the entire area between umbilicus and arm pits.
  • Cold damp cotton warm quickly.

Alternating hot and cold application

  • Lie down in supine position between sheet & blanket.
  • Place 2 hot folded bath towels on the body covering shoulders to hip.
  • Cover the body with sheet leave for 5 mints.
  • Return one layer hot towel & cold towel.
  • Cover with blanket and leave until cold towel is warmed.

Ice Pack

  • Ice decongest the tissues as it absorbed large amount of heat during liquefaction

Procedure

  • Place crushed ice in a towel up to thickness of one inch and pin the towel keep the flannel over the site of pain and put the ice pack over this.
  • Cover the pack

Indications:

  • Sprains, joint swelling, bursitis, headache

Contra indications:

  • Acute bladder problems, abdominal application, chest application in acute asthma

Bathing Methods

1. Depending on temperature

Neutral bath

  • Water temperature is similar to body temperature
  • Take a bath with water of 36.1C0 and get in to bath tub up to shoulder level
  • Water can be heated but should not exceed 97 F
  • Support the back of the head with a towel
  • Bath is for 30mints

Indications:

  • Anxiety, stress, chronic pain, fluid retentions
  • Contra indication: Skin conditions, cardiac diseases

Hot Cold Alternate Bath

Ice cubes can be added to cold water to enhance contrast

Local area should be alternately immersed in hot and cold water.

Order of temperature:

  • 1-3 mints in hot water (41 0 C 43 0 C)
  • 15-30 seconds in cold water (15 0 C)
  • 1-3 mints in hot water
  • 15seconds cold


Indications: Congestions, Inflammations in locally and generally

Contraindication: Hemorrhage, colic and spasms, acute bladder kidney infections
